Sticky Notes

Post-it notes were invented by accident. There were actually two accidents that lead to the invention of the Post-it notes. The first was by Spencer Silver, an engineer in 1968, Silver was working at 3M trying to create super strong adhesives for use in the aerospace industry in building planes. Instead of a super strong adhesive, though, he accidentally managed to create an incredibly weak, pressure sensitive adhesive agent. In 1973, when Geoff Nicholson was made products laboratory manager at 3M, Silver approached him immediately with the adhesive and gave him samples to play with. Silver also suggested what he saw as his best idea for what to use the adhesive for, making a bulletin board with the adhesive sprayed on it. The name “Post-It notes” was created and the first sales began in 11 States in America in 1979, and then the entire country in 1980. Finally, they were exported in Canada and Europe a year later.

Post-it notes are more than a practical tool; they are a psychological tool.
It is a tool with high- tech minimalist vision with a simple and effective use with a bright yellow colour that attracts your attention. Lacking any other graphic elements, the Post-it notes has the effect of a white screen, “tidy and relaxing”.

There on about over 50 billion Sticky sheets sold each year. They are widely used in companies, in a particular form of brainstorming and reminders. According to some studies, using Post-it notes are enjoyable to use, because they are clear. For example, most decisions are made in meetings where they use visual content.

According to Pierre Mongin  Sticky notes could reduce stress “…When short term memory is crowded with multiple tasks, this produces stress.” Writing on a Sticky notes is a way of not overloading and helps people de-stress.

Digitizing handwritten notes

The main reason we use Sticky notes is that it is quick! David Allen makes it clear that the method “Getting Things Done: GTD” does not proceed “time management”, but “action management to achieve results”. Practice the method leads to identify safety priorities at any time, and better get in position to take immediate action on the priority chosen, this is exactly the purpose of Post-it notes. Some users prefer to write a note on Sticky notes and stick them on their phone before finding the time to transfer the content rather than noting it directly into their phone, Beesy found the solution…

iPhones and iPads are already equipped with a Notepad but it is rather limited. In our constant quest to make everything we write down into the digital world, were invented, many methods and tools that allow us to organize ourselves at work.

Examples of methods for digitizing our notes:

  • Audio recording:Possibility to record the lot of a meeting but it is long and difficult process to find a part of a meeting that interest us.
  • Word Processing Solution (ex: Word ou Evernote): Practical to do the layout but no utility for the company productivity, because everyone will have to look up for his or hers actions in the meeting minutes.
digitizing handwritten notes
  •  Directly from your mailbox: Same idea as the Word Processing Solution but is added and mixed dozens of emails that you have already processed.
  • The paper notebook: Certainly the simplest way, to take notes during meetings. Nevertheless, it is a long process to digitalize your notes afterwards.
  • Sticky notes/Digital sticky notes: Very convenient, especially when you don’t want to forget anything and it is very visual but you have to retype what is written on it. Organizing yourself only with Sticky notes can be quite impossible unless you have a large wall in front of your desk…
