Top 10 Best Productivity iPad applications – June 2014: What happened in a year?

One year after the last Top 10 we’ve posted things have changed the world of Productivity on iPad met a revolution with the release of the Microsoft Office suite for iPad in March 2014.
If people were agree to say that iWorks suite was the must-have apps for document processing, now everyone swear by new Microsoft Office apps. This is one reason why there are no more apps from iWorks in this monthly top . Another reason is that iWorks comes as native apps on new devices.Nonetheless, even if almost all reviews admit that Microsoft Apps for productivity are the best tools for iPad ever made, the success of the Office suite has to be nuanced. The suite is pretty expensive compared to similar apps: it costs $9/month; and the peculiarity of it, and the reason why the 3 Office apps (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) occupy the Top 5 ranking is that the applications are free to download. The free versions are merely basic viewers and the premium version (called 365subscription) comes through an in-app purchase. Thereby, the numbers of downloads of the Office suite free version is, in a way, biased.

Then, more generally we can see that the Free Top 10 ranking is occupied exclusively by big brands (Microsoft, Google, DropBox and Yahoo) while the Paid Top 10 ranking is exclusively occupied by way less hegemonic companies.
Furthermore, it is interesting to see how now free applications manage to be more profitable than paid one (in a ration of 6 free apps out of 10, with the four most profitable being free ones).

Is the In-App Purchase the best way to make money out of an application?
Nothing is for sure, since Google, one of the richest companies in the world, is providing free apps without in-app purchases.
However, if we take out the Office suite, which status as free app is more than questionable, Evernote (free) becomes the most profitable application of the App Store, thanks to its clever in-app purchase.
